Ett av världens största transportflygplan landade på Malmö Airport under lördagsförmiddagen. Planet av modellen C-5 Galaxy tillhör det amerikanska flygvapnet.

It is sad and tragic news that the Antonov An-225 Mriya, the world’s largest operational aircraft, was destroyed in the sea by Russian forces during their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The plane was parked at the Hostomel Airport near Kyiv when it was attacked and set on fire. The plane was undergoing maintenance and one of its engines was dismantled, preventing it from taking off.

It was built in 1988 by the Soviet Union as a strategic airlift for carrying heavy and oversized cargo. It had six engines, a wingspan of 88.4 meters (290 feet), and a length of 84 meters (276 feet). It could carry up to 250 tonnes (551,000 pounds) of cargo and fly up to 15,400 kilometers (9,570 miles) without refueling. It was also used to transport the Soviet space shuttle Buran on its back.

The destruction of the Antonov An-225 Mriya is a huge loss for the aviation industry and the world. It was the only one of its kind and had no direct competitors. It was used for humanitarian missions, scientific experiments, and commercial flights around the world. It had fans and admirers who marveled at its size and capabilities.

The Ukrainian authorities have vowed to rebuild the plane at Russia’s expense, estimating the cost at $3 billion and the time at five years. They have also announced plans to complete a second An-225 that was partially built in the 1980s but never finished. But, these plans are uncertain and depend on many factors, such as the outcome of the war, the availability of funds and resources, and the technical feasibility.

The largest operational aircraft in the world is now the Antonov An-124 Ruslan, another Soviet-designed strategic airlifter that is smaller than the An-225 but still very impressive. It has four engines, a wingspan of 73.3 meters (240 feet), and a length of 69 meters (226 feet). It can carry up to 150 tonnes (330,000 pounds) of cargo and fly up to 16,800 kilometers (10,400 miles) without refueling. It is operated by several countries, including Russia, Ukraine, Libya, and India.
