The Asia-Pacific airline signed the leasing agreement with Danish leasing firm Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC). Garuda's order includes 25 firm aircraft and options for 10 additional 72-600s.

ATR will begin delivering the regional turboprops in November 2013, the European manufacturer said Tuesday. The 72-600s will be configured with 70 seats, powered by Pratt & Whitney 127M engines. The aircraft will be equipped with ATR's Armonia cabin, introduced in 2012 with new in-flight entertainment (IFE) and cabin management systems (CMS).

"South East Asia is definitely providing us with huge leasing potential and the ATR 72-600s perfectly match the requirements for short-haul travel in terms of low operating costs, comfort and ability to operate in small airfields and remote areas," said  Martin Moller, chairman of NAC. The aircraft leasing firm placed an order for 90 ATR 600 series aircraft at the Paris Airshow.

CHC gjør seg fete for Wall Street

CHC files for stock market listing, orders nine S-92s

CHC Group, parent company of offshore transportation specialist CHC Helicopter, is planning a US stock market flotation, the proceeds from which are earmarked for “debt repayments and general corporate purposes”.
No timeline for the initial public offering has yet been revealed; nor have the price range or number of shares likely to be made available. However, the group’s owner, US investment fund First Reserve, says following any sale it will “continue to own a majority of the voting power of ordinary shares”.
For the three months ended 31 July 2013, net debt rose to $1.55 billion from $1.32 for the same period a year earlier. Its debt to EBITDA ratio sits at 5.4:1, a slight improvement on the 5.6:1 recorded in the previous year.
Nonetheless, the company is confident its position in the market as one of the two biggest helicopter operators involved in the offshore transportation segment and the potential for growth in that sector make it an attractive investment proposition.
“We believe that the adoption of more complex services on ultra-deepwater and deepwater installations, increased regulatory oversight of these installations and more frequent rotation of increasingly larger crews at regular intervals will further drive customer demand for heavy and medium helicopters, which comprise all our fleet,” says its IPO prospectus.
It has also moved to further bolster its fleet, signing for nine Sikorsky S-92s with options for a further 15 aircraft. Chief executive William Amelio told analysts on its first-quarter earnings call that the new rotorcraft will be offshore work and “perhaps search and rescue flights as well”.
Delivery of the first five helicopters will take place in 2015, with the remainder due the following year. The options cover the period between 2015-2018.
The latest commitment follows a deal last year for 10 AgustaWestland AW139s and an order in 2011 for 20 Eurocopter EC225s, with an additional four options.
It is likely CHC has exercised these options, too. In the IPO prospectus it notes the S-92 order and then refers to a recent “commitment to purchase $100 million of heavy helicopters from Eurocopter”. With the list price of an EC225 at around $25-$30 million, this would point towards the extra aircraft being firmed up.
No-one from CHC or Eurocopter was immediately available to comment, however.

FAA permitterer inspektører

FAA Furloughs: 3,000 Airline Safety Inspectors Off The Job Due To Government Shutdown, Union Says

By JOAN LOWY

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nearly 3,000 aviation safety inspectors are being furloughed by the Federal Aviation Administration as part of the government shutdown, the union representing the inspectors said Monday.

The inspectors check to make sure airlines are maintaining their planes safely, conduct inspections at airports of planes and pilots, and visit domestic and foreign repair stations where airlines send planes for major overhauls, among other safety jobs, said Kori Blalock Keller, a spokeswoman for the union, Professional Aviation Safety Specialists.

Union officials initially thought the FAA had made a mistake when they received word of the furloughs, Blalock Keller said. But FAA Administrator Michael Huerta confirmed the inspector furloughs in a phone call with union officials Monday, she said.

Mike Perrone, the union's national president, said he is "outraged that the FAA would consider aviation safety inspectors as playing anything but a pivotal role in protecting the safety of the American public. Furloughing this critical workforce is neither in the best interest of the economy nor the oversight of this country's aviation system."

Employees critical to public safety are generally exempt from the furloughs.

FAA spokeswoman Kristie Greco declined to confirm the union's tally of the number of inspectors furloughed and the type of inspections they conduct. She said nearly 2,500 safety office personnel - including some inspectors - will be furloughed, but they may be called back to work incrementally over the next two weeks.

"Many employees will be on call and ready to return to work if necessary," she said.

(Illustrasjonsfoto: NTB scanpix)

Omstridte flytidsregler avvist i EU-parlamentet

Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Department Trains UAS Night Flights

The Grand Forks County sheriff’s department is expanding its unmanned aircraft operations to include night flights.
The department has flown six daytime missions since getting FAA approval earlier this year. Now the FAA says the department can train for after-dark missions.
“Because a lot of serious law enforcement incidents occur at night, it will allow us to go out and work those missions,” said programme manager Alan Frazier.
Before the aircraft can fly actual missions, there will be a lot of practice flights at night.
“We’re in to somewhat uncharted waters here — the FAA recognizes that. That’s why they encouraged us to start with a training authorization,” Frazier said. “We have a very limited area that we’ll be flying in rural Grand Forks County.”
Frazier says the biggest challenge will be learning to avoid trees and other obstacles at night. He says the Grand Forks sheriff’s department is only the second agency in the nation authorized by the FAA to fly the small unmanned aircraft at night.
