EASA Certifies EC225 Gearshaft Redesign

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certified the redesigned vertical bevel gear shaft for Airbus Helicopters’ EC225, allowing production and installation on all compatible rotorcraft in operation globally. Manufacturing for this new gear shaft is underway, allowing worldwide implementation on aircraft in service and in production starting in the second semester of 2014. According to Airbus, the new design eliminates three factors that, in combination, caused two unexpected vertical shaft ruptures. It provides corrosion resistance, compensates for residual stress and eliminates stress hot spots.
