Fatal Crash Mars Start of Brazil Summer Helicopter Season
A Helimarte Helibrás Esquilo
crashed en route to a hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, Saturday, killing the pilot
and all four passengers on board. The helicopter left São Paulo's central Campo
de Marte airport on the morning of December 27, for the half-hour flight to the
coastal resort of Guarujá to pick up a couple, their two-year-old daughter and
the nanny, to take the child to a hospital in São Paulo. After the pickup at
condominium heliport SDIX, the helicopter crashed 18 miles away in a swamp
between a river and highway, catching fire after the crash. The pilot, Thiago
Yamamoto, 33, had flown for charter firm Helimarte for seven years. Helimarte
operates 14 aircraft, including helicopters and jets. This is the second fatal
accident in its history. The single-turbine Esquilo HB-350B registration PT-HNC
that crashed Saturday had up-to-date registration and inspections. Weather was
fine at the time of the crash, and local residents said helicopter traffic was
common on the route. About 80 Esquilos are registered in Brazil. The model is
used by many police and fire departments. The wreckage was collected Sunday by
Brazilian investigative agency, SERIPA Region IV. Helicopter charters are an
increasingly popular option for families that want to summer at the shore, but
avoid the massive traffic jams of the few highways that run between the coast
and São Paulo.
