In December 2024, The War Zone had the rare
opportunity to witness the U.S. Marine Corps’ F-35Bs in action during a
high-stakes exercise that brought cutting-edge combat tactics to life. Four
F-35Bs from VMFA-214 “Black Sheep” squadron, joined by two from VMX-1, as
well as two USAF C-17s, departed MCAS Yuma, Arizona, and headed for San
Clemente Island, a critical military training site off the coast of San
Diego. Before landing, these aircraft had to fight their way through a
simulated air battle against advanced ‘red air’ adversaries, showcasing their
ability to secure airspace under hostile conditions. For three days they
fought a mock war from the island, living in tents and only using what they
could bring with them. It was perhaps the best glimpse we have seen of what a
real fight in the Pacific could look like for Marine F-35s. Read our in-depth
feature
here. -- Kyle Gunn The War Zone
