Trump calls for increase in NATO spending that could drive Pentagon budget beyond $1 trillion

The president said he is “going to ask all NATO nations to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP,” a sharp increase from the current benchmark of 2% that many member states already struggle to hit. Currently, the U.S. spends about 3.4% of GDP on the defense budget.
