The US military showed amazing prowess in rescuing 'Dude 44' Alpha and Bravo over Easter weekend. Though the US suffered no fatalities in the operation, aircraft losses included a Fairchild Republic A-10, two Lockheed Martin MC-130Js, and Boeing AH-6 Little Bird helicopters.

Tehran and its allies have learned from this episode: any future rescue efforts of downed American airmen will be more difficult.

The danger of a captured American pilot likely weighs heavily on the White House, particularly given the war’s lack of domestic support. A failure in a major rescue mission would bring back haunting echoes of the 1980 Desert One fiasco, which doomed the legacy of President Jimmy Carter.

The Trump administration has few good roads out of this predicament. Relying solely on airpower to bomb Iran into submission did not work in the opening 40 days. Airpower alone is also not likely to work against a bitterly defiant regime that has reconstituted and reinforced itself.
