RPAS 2012 – ICAO UAS Study Group: Current Status & the Way Ahead

UVS International’s RPAS 2012 Conference in Paris from June 5 – 7 opens this morning with the first presentation of the day given by Leslie Cary of ICAO – International Civil Aviation Organization entitled: “ICAO UAS Study Group: Current Status & the Way Ahead”.

ABSTRACT
The presentation will provide an overview of ICAO’s role in the development of aviation standards, including those applicable to remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS); the mandate of the ICAO UAS Study Group; and expectations for development of Standards and guidance material. Most significantly, recently adopted Standards related to RPAS operations will be discussed and their relevance for subsequent provisions.
On-going aspects of the UAS Study Group, which will be described, include:

• Approval of RPA Systems
• Operator certification
• Terminology
• Special authorisations
• Concept for airworthiness
• Licensing and competencies
• RPAS Manual development
