Boeing announced today the completion of the firm configuration milestone for the 777-9, the first member of the 777X family to be developed.
The Boeing 777X team reached this significant design milestone after working closely with airline customers and key suppliers to optimize the configuration of the new airplane.
The 777X family includes the 777-8 and the 777-9 – both designed to respond to market needs and customer preferences. The 777-8 and 777-9 provide significant range, payload and fuel burn advantages compared to the A350.
"It's great to see the airlines and industry team side-by-side with us as we achieve this important milestone," said Bob Feldmann, vice president and general manager of the 777X program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The team has followed a disciplined process to complete all of the requirements for this stage of the program."
Analyst Saj Ahmad said the milestone had important implicatioms for the Middle East. “With firm configuration of the 777X (777-9 specifically) in place, Boeing and its customers can push on in getting further milestones checked off so that production of the first airplane can being in 2017.
“The first autoclave that will produce the giant 777X wings has also been completed and with big orders held by Arabian airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad, they'll be keen to see the 777X progressing well given the delays Boeing encountered on the 787 program.”

The 777-8X and 777-9X are critically important to the organic growth strategies employed by the big three Arab airlines. By utilising the 777X's immense range and payload capability that will deliver the lowest fuel burn and trip costs of any twin-engine airplane, they'll be able to open up even more non-stop routes from their Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar hubs.

“The wider fuselage over the A350 family allows the 777X to enjoy significant passenger cabin comfort while being able to haul more belly freight too. As the biggest 777 and 777X customer, Emirates is also keen to showcase its new and revamped first class cabins and it'll become a centrepiece of their 777X fleet, particularly as it phases out older jets from its fleet from the start of the next decade,” Ahmad said.

Emirates plans to induct its first 777-9X in the summer of 2020.
