Hawker Crash CVR: FO Had Difficulty Flying IFR Approach

The first officer piloting the Hawker 700A (N237WR) that crashed into an unoccupied building near Akron Fulton (Ohio) International Airport on November 10 had difficulties flying the approach to Runway 25 in IFR minimums, according to a cockpit voice recorder transcript the NTSB released on Tuesday. That transcript is just part of the nearly 1,200 pages of documents the agency issued via a public docket it opened this week. “Look, you're going 120. You can't keep decreasing your speed,” the captain told the first officer approximately two minutes before the crash, later stating, “You’re diving…Don't dive. Two thousand feet per minute, buddy.” Seconds before impact, the captain instructed the first officer to level off, followed by a “rattle similar to a stick shaker” and a TAWS “pull up” warning. All nine persons aboard died when the jet crashed into an apartment building two miles from the airport. According to the docket, both pilots were hired by the Florida-based operator ExecuFlight in June 2015, and the first officer had been terminated from his past job over training concerns. In 2014, the captain received a letter of correction for violating ATC instructions. The NTSB also identified discrepancies with company hiring procedures and background checks, as well as improper recording of the aircraft’s empty weight. A probable cause report is pending.
