I guess these pilots are retired from the airlines now, bored to death after having quit the Navy.... (Ed.)
VP-6 | CREW 8 INCIDENT - January 3, 1987
* On 3 January, following a four hour ASW Operational Patrol,
Crew Eight with PPC Lt Koshiol, CIP Lt Laufer and FIE AMH2 Addoms
commenced restart of loitered No.1 engine.
* All initial restart indications were normal when RPM suddenly ...
surged out of control. An unsuccessful attempt was made to
feather the malfunctioning propellor, leaving the crew with a
compounded emergency.
* Nursing their crippled aircraft, Crew Eight began their
arduous 800NM transit to NAS Barbers Point at a painstakenly slow
150 kts.
* Throughout the transit, Mission Commander, CDR James
coordinated crew efforts for possible ditch or bailout ensuring
all preparations were complete.
* 100NM from Barbers Point, the airframe was raked with
vibrations as the engines gearbox deteriorated internally, coupled
with a firewarning on #1 engine. Emergency procedures were
executed and the fire extinguished.
* 75NM out, a second fire warning illuminated, which was also
brought under control by the crew coupled with a gap developing
between #1 afterbody and propellor ... the prop was beginning to
separate from the engine.
* 12NM out, #1 propellor separated from the engine, striking and
critically damaging #2 propellor, cuasing a subsequent fire on #2
engine before it fell below the aircraft.
* Emergency procedures were executed on #2 engine which failed
to feather as the pilots fought to control the severly crippled
aircraft doggedly continuing to fly it towards the Rwy.
* At 7NM, #2 prop rotation finally stopped and Lt Koshiol set up
for a landing on Rwy 4l, while It Laufer, as previously briefed,
held the landing gear to improve control ability until the landing
was assured.
* The aircraft touched down 2000' down the runway, coming to a
stop on centerline with 2,500' of runway remaining.
*
Elapsed time since initial emergency, 4 Hours, 10 Minutes.
