The aircraft impacted the waters of the Mississippi river in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. The airplane's destroyed wreckage was located and the three people onboard were presumably fatally injured.
The wreckage is in water over 70 feet deep.
The identity of the aircraft has been confirmed. The NTSB reported the plane to be a Cessna 172I. Local media reported it departed Fleming field about 14:00 hour. Flight tracking records show N8488L, a Cessna 172I departing Fleming Field at 14:28. Last tracking data stop over the Mississippi River at 14:32.
