PT PAL Indonesia Develops Hand-Held Laser Weapon to Strengthen National Defense

Surabaya, [24/12] – PT PAL Indonesia is developing a laser weapon to strengthen national defense. The portable laser weapon, based on a directed-energy system, was demonstrated and tested directly by the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, Donny Ermawan Taufanto, at the Shipnaming & Launching of the Merah Putih Frigate “KRI Balaputradewa-322” on Thursday evening (18/12/2025).

The hand-held laser weapon developed by PT PAL Indonesia has an adjustable firing range of 50 meters to 500 meters or even more.

PT PAL Indonesia’s success in developing this laser weapon with international strategic partners is part of the strengthening of domestically produced defense equipment. This innovation is a significant breakthrough because it offers a relatively low-cost, futuristic weapon alternative, with a single laser shot requiring only electrical energy equivalent to less than Rp15,000.

PT PAL Indonesia’s President Director, Kaharuddin Djenod, emphasized that defense technology innovation is not merely a symbol of progress, but a strategic instrument for the nation. “Technological innovation is not about style, but about how we build the competitiveness of the national maritime industry through proven, concrete work. Defense industry independence directly improves Indonesia’s bargaining position in global defense and economic diplomacy, and underpins the stability of the Indo-Pacific region,” he said.

Kaharuddin further explained that this weapon focuses laser radiation precisely with effective destructive power on medium- to long-range targets. “This step underscores PT PAL Indonesia’s commitment to ensuring that every defense innovation developed does not stop in the laboratory, but is ready for operation to safeguard national maritime sovereignty and security,” Djenod said.
