A Boeing BA aircraft smashed into a buffalo while
preparing to takeoff from a runway in western India on Thursday evening, raising
questions about airport security.
The aircraft, part of Indian budget
carrier SpiceJet fleet, had 146 people on board when it collided with the animal
that had wandered into Surat airport in Gujarat.
The collision damaged one of the twin engines of the 737-800
jet, grounded the plane and created alarm among security agencies who questioned
how such a large animal could have got through the airport's perimeter fence and
approached the runway undetected.
