Meeting new flight tracking recommendations

Recent incidents, such as the accident of the Air France flight 447, have led to recommendations to address the difficulty of finding a flight data recorder (Huerta, 2015). The length of time of transmission of underwater locator beacons, which send out a signal to help investigators find units in water, has recently been extended from 30 days to 90 days to improve the chances of locating recorders. However, there is still the possibility that it may be very difficult to locate or recover a recorder. Moreover, the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has led to increased calls for data to be streamed from aircraft (Croft, 2014).
Aircraft flight data recorders, such as the Fortress flight data recorder, can be designed to act as a storage device within an 'connected aircraft'. Functionality within a Flight Data Management Unit can be used to monitor data to look for events that can trigger a data download via an Automatic Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS) and a SATCOM. For example, an unexpected deviation from a flight path could trigger the sending of data to alert parties of a potential incident.
