Following an EU-China summit in Brussels this week,
China has agreed to work with the European Union (EU) to cut greenhouse gas
emissions by developing Chinese emissions trading schemes, among other
projects.
Chen Deming, China’s commerce minister, and Andris
Piebalgs, EU Development Commissioner, signed a financing deal supporting the
eco-friendly initiatives. The EU has extensive experience in fighting climate
change, and is ready to share its knowledge with China.
In addition to aiding in the design and application
of emissions trading schemes, the EU will also assist Chinese cities in
establishing resource-efficiency, while reducing water and heavy-metal
pollution, and implementing sustainable waste treatment policies.
"The results of these projects will benefit all of
us and contribute to our common objective: a sustainable development of the
planet," Piebalgs said.
The EU has pledged
EUR€25 million (USD$33 million) toward technical assistance and three
carbon-reduction projects over a four-year period
