Army Helicopters Collide Over Fort Campbell, Ky.; At Least 6 Dead

TED BRIDISJune 19, 1996

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) _ Two Army helicopters collided Tuesday as soldiers descended to the ground on ropes in an air-assault demonstration for a group of visitors. At least six people were reported killed and 16 injured.

The accident _ the military’s second fatal helicopter collision in just over a month _ occurred during the afternoon when the propellers of the two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters hit each other, Lt. Col. Ray Whitehead said at Army headquarters at the Pentagon. Both helicopters crashed to the ground.

The helicopters were taking part in a demonstration in which soldiers lowered themselves from the aircraft on ropes, Whitehead said.

A group of visitors from the Association of the U.S. Army, or AUSA, was watching, WJZM radio of Clarksville, Tenn., reported. AUSA is devoted to boosting cooperation between Army bases and businesses in towns nearby.

An Army official at the Pentagon, speaking on condition of anonymity, said six people were killed and at least 16 injured.

It was not immediately known if anyone on the ground was injured.

The helicopters are part of the elite 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, which straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee line. The Black Hawk helicopter is used for attack missions or medical evacuations. It usually has a crew of three and can carry up to 11 combat-equipped troops.

On May 10, two Marine helicopters collided in the dark at Camp Lejeune, N.C., killing 14 servicemen and seriously injured two. The CH-46E Sea Knight troop carrier and an AH-1W Super Cobra assault ship were participating in war games involving thousands of British and American troops.

The helicopter crash on Tuesday is the second at Fort Campbell this year. Five soldiers were killed when an MH-47E Chinook crashed near the Tennessee border on March 7 during a training mission.

Two HH-60 Blackhawk helicopters with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) crashed in Trigg County, Kentucky, at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to a statement from Fort Campbell.

Crewmembers were flying “during a routine training mission when the incident occurred. The status of the crew members are unknown at this time. The command is currently focused on caring for the servicemembers and their families,” according to a statement on the base’s Facebook page.

The crash is expected to result in fatalities, according to Gov. Andy Beshear, as first responders are at the scene. Trigg County is located just north of the Kentucky-Tennessee state border.

We’ve got some tough news out of Fort Campbell, with early reports of a helicopter crash and fatalities are expected,” Beshear said on Twitter. “Please pray for all those affected.”

A spokesperson with the Kentucky State Police said they were assisting Fort Campbell authorities after an “aircraft incident” in a rural area.

The agency was contacted around 10:15 p.m. local time, Kentucky State Police Post 1 spokesperson Trooper Sarah Burgess said, and “numerous agencies” were assisting. Burgess described the area as a field and wooded.

No residential areas are affected by the incident, she said.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
