An F/A-18 Hornet jet crashed at 11:54 p.m. on Thursday in a rural area of California east of Interstate 15 near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

Search and rescue operations by both military and local emergency response teams are underway, Capt. Michael Scaccia, a spokesman for MCAS Miramar, said Friday.

Details surrounding the incident remain limited and the condition of the pilot is unknown, officials said.

The exact cause of the crash is unclear and an investigation has begun, a Marine Corps statement said.

The crash was first reported by a local CBS affiliate.

MCAS Miramar is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. This aircraft is not assigned to the wing but was operating out of the air station, the statement said.

The crash site is on government property east of the air station and “there are no indications of damage to property on the ground,” the statement said.
