Naval vessels provide large and potent combat systems, but are vulnerable to attack from surface or undersea vessels as well as airborne and shore-based threats. Maintaining situational awareness well beyond the horizon is a must for self-defense and to strike first at hostiles.  Most sensors operating above water, however, are limited to line-of-sight and reach only to the horizon. Elevated sensors dramatically increase a vessel’s surveillance area.
