The first two NHIndustries NH90s made their way to the Spanish Army’s Manoeuvre III Battalion based in the northern region of La Rioja on Tuesday, according to a news release.
Designated as the HT-29 Caiman by the Army’s air mobile force (FAMET), the NHIndustries rotorcraft had its systems designed and produced in Spain, which is also where it was assembled at an Airbus factory in Albacete. A formal reception was held for the first two NH90s at the Coronel Maté base. After signatures were made on the official documents, the helicopters flew to Agoncillo, where the Manouevre III Battalion is located.
The NH90 has two variants: one for naval operations and one for land-based operations. The twin-engine, medium helicopter also features a fly-by-wire flight control system. More than 270 NH90s are currently operational.
