Cargolux B748 near Ankara, Budapest and Vienna on Jan 11th 2017, captain falls ill and becomes incapacitated

A Cargolux Boeing 747-800, registration LX-VCN performing freight flight CV-856 (dep Jan 10th) from Luxembourg (Luxembourg) to Dubai Al Maktoum (United Arab Emirates) with 2 crew, was enroute at FL350 about 70nm northwest of Ankara (Turkey) when the crew decided to return to Luxembourg due to the captain feeling increasingly unwell. The aircraft climbed to FL360 for the way back and was enroute over Hungary when the first officer requested to divert to Vienna at the fastest possible routing and without any delay reporting the captain's condition had badly deteriorated, left body side, the first officer was unsure whether digestion or anything else. The first officer advised he wanted to land on runway 16, would need to stop on the runway and requested the ambulance to meet the aircraft at intersection taxiway B10, subsequently a tow truck was needed to tow the aircraft to the apron. The first officer initiated the descent towards Vienna about 30nm southeast of Budapest and performed a safe landing on Vienna's runway 16 about 50 minutes after the first request to divert to Vienna upon checking in with Budapest Center. The captain was taken to a hospital, the aircraft was towed to the apron about 35 minutes after landing.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Vienna for 9 hours, then continued the journey to Dubai's Al Maktoum Airport.

United Continental Holdings Inc (UAL, +1.87%) said on Wednesday it had advanced the retirement of 747s from its service to the fourth quarter of this year from end-2018.

United will replace the Boeing 747 fleet, which it has been flying since 1970, with other fuel-efficient, cost-effective and widebody aircraft, Scott Kirby, president, United Airlines , wrote in a blog.

The No.3 U.S. airline by passenger traffic operated 22 747-400 owned and leased aircraft of its total 715 mainline fleet as of Dec. 31, 2015.
Boeing Co (BA, +0.21%) said in July it would consider ending production of 747s as it faced falling orders and pricing pressure. The aircraft maker delivered a total nine 747s in 2016, half the deliveries in 2015.
