The U.S.
military says it will soon deliver "new" air defense systems to
Ukraine that fire AIM-9M Sidewinder heat-seeking missiles. What these
systems are remains a mystery, but The
War Zone has previously discussed the possibility of a
surface-to-air Sidewinder capability for the Ukrainian forces. This
followed the unexplained inclusion of AIM-9Ms, an older air-to-air
version of the Sidewinder, in previous U.S. military aid packages earlier
this year. You can read more about what this ground-based air defense
system might be, which could have some very old roots, in our recent report.
Meanwhile, a
new version of the uncrewed Ripsaw mini-tank with a huge air defense turret
armed with a 30mm automatic cannon and short-range surface-to-air
missiles has emerged. The combination is being pitched primarily as a
counter-drone system, but could be used against a variety of other aerial
threats, including cruise missiles and low-flying aircraft. You can learn
more about the new configuration, which was unveiled by American
Rheinmetall at this year's Association of the U.S. Army's (AUSA) main
conference and exhibition in Washington, D.C., in this article.
