Passengers on an Air France flight that had been diverted from Beirut to
Damascus, were asked how much cash they had after the Syrian authorities refused
to accept payment by credit card to refuel the aircraft.
Reuters quoted an airline spokeswoman “As a
precaution and in anticipation, the crew asked how much money the passengers had
in cash to pay to fill up with fuel”. Subsequently an “alternative
arrangement” was reached, although exactly what the arrangement was has not been
revealed but did not involve passenger contributions.
The incident on Wednesday came about when the flight was
diverted from Beirut due to unrest in the city. It intended to land at Amman but
due to its fuel situation was obliged to land in Syria’s capital. The aircraft was able to depart after two hours and fly to
Cyprus.
