Hong Kong Airlines has fleet expansion blocked
Hong Kong Airlines has had its planned fleet
expansion blocked by the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department. The reason for the
‘unprecedented move’ by the Department has been interpreted by a number of
experts as saying that it is of the opinion that standards, including safety,
could be compromised until the carrier can prove it has the infrastructure to
handle a larger fleet. Accordingly the Department has added a condition to the
airline’s Air Operators Certificate restricting it to its current fleet
level.
However some commentators have said that the move could be seen
as being part of China’s opposition to the EU’s Emission Trading Scheme, in fact
it has banned its airlines from participating in the scheme. Hong Kong Airlines
has 10 A380s on order worth nearly $4 billion.
