Narrative:
The aircraft, A Piper PA-60-601P (Machen Superstar 700 conv.) impacted field terrain while on approach in Sangamon County about 7 miles southeast of Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (KSPI), Springfield, Illinois. The airplane was destroyed during the accident sequence and the three occupants onboard along with their dog sustained fatal injures.
The Sangamon County Sheriff's Department says the pilot reported having trouble with the plane's instruments prior to the crash.
One of the occupants was Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards and her husband, former Springfield Mayor Frank Edwards.
A nest camera located on a home nearby captured the accident, the plane impacts the ground left wing first before coming to the rest in the backyard of a house.
