Notable accidents
- 21 January 1993 – Italian development Merlin PP2 crashed near Novara-Cameri airfield in Italy after an uncommanded application of the rotor brake in flight. Four people were killed.[146][171]
- 7 April 1995 – British development Merlin PP4 (ZF644) crashed while in-flight from Yeovil, England. All four crew members escaped the helicopter during its descent before it hit the ground.[172]
- 20 August 1996 – Italian development Merlin PP7 (I-HIOI) was damaged in an accident when it turned over after the tail rotor drive failed on landing. The helicopter was repaired.[173]
- 27 October 2000 – Royal Navy Merlin (ZH844) ditched near the Isle of Skye, Scotland after a hydraulic fire caused by the rotor brake being partially engaged.[174]
- 30 March 2004 – Royal Navy Merlin (ZH859) crashed on take-off from RNAS Culdrose due to tail rotor hub cracking.[175]
- 15 November 2007 – During embarkation for a medical evacuation on São Jorge Island, Azores, a Portuguese Air Force Merlin caused injuries to five people when it unexpectedly climbed by one metre before the pilot recovered control. A Portuguese Air Force spokesperson later stated that this kind of incident is unheard of.[176]
- 14 October 2009 - A British Royal Navy EH101 Merlin landed short of the designated landing pad on the Canadian Forces HMCS Montreal. The cause was determined to be pilot error. Substantial damage to helicopter but no injuries.[177]
- 9 November 2009 - A British Royal Air Force AW101 Merlin HC3 crashed at an airfield during a night time training exercise near Holtville, CA in preparation for deployment to Afghanistan. The aircraft fell on its side following a hard landing. The helicopter was one of four Merlins deployed to El Centro, CA as part of Exercise Merlin Vortex.[178]
- 11 October 2014 - A Royal Danish Air Force AW101 suffered extensive damage after rolling over after experiencing pilot-induced oscillation following a landing in Afghanistan. No casualties.[179][180][181]
- 23. Nov. 2016. The accident happened at Nigerian Air Force Base Makurdi. Reports indicate the incident happened after the aircraft had landed. A flight engineer was apparently taxiing the aircraft to a hangar when it lifted up and rolled over onto its side.
- 18 August 2017 a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force CH-101 flipped during a cargo hauling exercise, injuring four servicemen and causing substantial damage. The helicopter had been assigned to the icebreaker Shirase for an expedition to Antarctica.[182][183][184]
- 24 November 2017 a Norwegian Armed Forces helicopter, delivered only one week earlier, tipped over during a test program while on ground on Stavanger Airport, Sola, Norway. Two pilots and four ground crew were present, but no injuries were reported.[185][importance?]
