In a historic
first, a fully electric-powered Robinson R44 helicopter flew from one airport
to another. The 21-nm flight took place on Saturday at 11 a.m. local
time from Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport in Thermal, California, to
Palm Springs International Airport. The electric R44 flight was flown by OC
Helicopters CEO Ric Webb and Martine Rothblatt, CEO of Lung Biotechnology parent
company United Therapeutics.
Tier 1 Engineering and Lung
Biotechnology are collaborating on the electric
R44 project. The plan is to use
electric-powered helicopters and eVTOLs for delivery of transplantable organs
on short-distance flights from airports to hospitals after the organs are
delivered by electric and sustainable-fuel-powered fixed-wing aircraft to
airports near hospitals.
This version of the
electric R44 is the third-generation design of the R44 electric-propulsion system.
It features a quick-swap battery back that can be changed in 15 minutes or
charged in one hour. Plans call for FAA certification of the R44
electric-propulsion system and development of “newer energy cells” that will
extend range to hundreds of miles, according to Rothblatt.

Regjeringen har besluttet at Forsvaret hever sin beredskap, og går over til en ny fase i sitt planverk fra 1. november. Dette skjer etter faglig råd fra forsvarssjefen. Det betyr at Forsvarets aktivitet tilpasses den alvorlige sikkerhetssituasjonen Europa er i.
– Vi står i den mest alvorlige sikkerhetspolitiske situasjonen på flere tiår. Det er ingen indikasjoner på at Russland vil utvide sin krigføring til andre land, men den økte spenningen gjør at vi er mer utsatte for både trusler, etterretning og påvirkning. Det gjør det nødvendig for alle NATO-land å være mer på vakt, også Norge, sier statsminister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Regjeringen styrket beredskapen allerede før krigen brøt ut, og har siden styrket den en rekke ganger. Forsvaret har de siste ukene økt tilstedeværelse og patruljering rundt kritisk infrastruktur i Nordsjøen. Heimevernet vil fortsette å beskytte kritisk infrastruktur på land som bistand til politiet.
– Det er en utvikling over tid som gjør at Forsvaret nå går over i en ny fase i sitt planverk. De oppgaver som ivaretar beredskapen her og nå vil prioriteres. Det er ikke alt som gjøres som synes, og det er ikke alt vi kan snakke åpent om. Forsvaret har god oversikt over situasjonen, og vi setter nå Forsvaret i stand til å stå i situasjonen over tid, sier forsvarsminister Bjørn Arild Gram.
For personellet i Forsvaret betyr dette at arbeidsoppgaver og aktivitet vil bli endret i tråd med omprioriteringene. Noen avdelinger vil oppleve mindre tradisjonell trening og øving. Det vil også være behov for å trekke på ressurser fra Heimevernet
– Forsvarets aller viktigste oppgave er å bevare vår fred og sikkerhet, og å hindre konflikt. For å løse denne oppgaven må vi tilpasse vår aktivitet etter situasjonen vi til enhver tid står i. Det gjør vi nå gjennom å omprioritere deler av våre planlagte aktiviteter for å styrke vår beredskap, vår operative evne og vår utholdenhet, sier forsvarssjef Eirik Kristoffersen.
Forsvaret ivaretar sikkerheten i våre nærområder sammen med våre allierte. Allierte bidrar blant annet med patruljering i Nordsjøen.
– Vi har dyktige kvinner og menn som er godt trent for å holde Norge trygt i en urolig tid. Vi er også medlem av en sterk forsvarsallianse. Det gir oss trygghet, sier statsminister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Air France-KLM is interested
in Portuguese airline TAP

The Air
France-KLM group is interested in taking a stake in the Portuguese company TAP.
At the press conference to present the results of the group, CEO Ben Smith said
his company wanted “partnership or acquisition if the conditions are right“.
According to
Smith, the merger of the companies is essential for Air France-KLM. “We have been
looking for opportunities on the Iberian Peninsula for many years,” said the
CEO.
Portuguese
Infrastructure Minister Pedro Nuno Santos has previously indicated that TAP
must merge with a major airline to remain viable. Prime Minister António Costa
revealed, at the end of September, that the Executive’s plan is to sell TAP’s
capital in the next 12 months, even though the State Budget proposal for 2023
does not contain anything under the privatisation heading.
The
Portuguese company, which was re-nationalised in 2020, suffered a loss of 1.6
billion euros last year and the government provided more than 2.5 billion euros
in support during the corona crisis.
The Air Force has flown two single-pilot sorties with KC-46 Pegasus tankers. The Oct. 25 flights were the first to test an experimental set of procedures it says are planned for use in grim circumstances. Earlier this year, the Air Force floated the idea, saying it was afraid it would run short of tanker pilots in a war with China since the aircraft are both vulnerable and high value. The single-pilot gambit is being investigated in case there aren’t enough pilots to fly surviving aircraft. The sorties were flown from McConnell Air Force Base with a pilot, a single boom operator and an instructor acting as a safety observer.
“This mission was practiced extensively in flight simulators,” Air Force Col. Nate Vogel, head of the 22nd Air Refueling Wing, said in a statement. “Each phase of evaluation has been carefully considered, taking into account crew safety, aircraft capabilities, and existing federal aviation standards. That allowed us to make a deliberate and thorough analysis of what risks and hurdles are present, how to mitigate those, and allowed us to recommend training requirements to familiarize crews with the basic functions and critical controls of unfamiliar crew positions.”
On the first flight, the skeleton crew just did the flying part but on the second hop the pilot and boom operator went through “a full mission profile including ground operations; preflight tasks; takeoff; aerial refueling rendezvous; air refueling on-load and offload; landing; and debrief.” When the boom operator wasn’t dispensing JetA, he or she was sitting in the right seat. In addition to the safety observer, a second KC-46 with experienced crew members flew alongside in case the small crew had any questions or issues.

Minister’s C-130 plane breaks down in Antarctica

New Zealand
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has arrived back in the country from Antarctica,
but not on the Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130H Hercules she arrived on.
The prime
minister has been in Scott Base this week, marking the 65th anniversary of the
site.

She was
originally scheduled to leave on 28 October, but was unable to due to a
mechanical problem with the NZ Air Force Hercules. The plane broke down and was
unable to make the journey back.
Instead, an
Italian C-130 Hercules returned Ardern and her entourage to Christchurch on 29
October afternoon.
A New
Zealand Defence Force spokesperson blamed the breakdown on the C-130H being on
the ground in Antarctica for two days: “Experience
has shown that cold temperatures can cause the aircraft propeller seals to have
issues on start-up due to congealing hydraulic fluid and seal rigidity. To
mitigate this issue propeller heaters are used and a methodical pre-flight
process is used to warm the aircraft to a suitable operating temperature.”
The
spokesperson said it was unfortunate these steps had not worked this time. “The C130H
will be repaired and is expected to return to New Zealand in the next few days.”
This is the
second travel issue the prime minister has had on her Antarctica trip – her
original flight was turned around due to bad weather.
New Zealand
has ordered five new Super Hercules aircraft which should be in service by
2025.

Nå setter Luftforsvaret fart
på planene om å kunne spre jagerflyene bedre, i et såkalt spredningskonsept.
– Det er et beskyttelsesverktøy. Trusselbildet har
endret seg det siste året. Vi jobber med å kunne spre flykapasiteten vår, når
situasjonen tilsier det, både lokalt, regionalt og internasjonalt, sier
Folland.

B-52S TO BE REGULARLY BASED AT RAAF BASE TINDAL

The US will soon regularly base six of its
nuclear-capable B-52 bombers at RAAF Base Tindal.
A report by Four Corners has revealed Washington will build dedicated facilities in the NT, including a ‘squadron operations
facility’ and parking areas for the aircraft.
It comes amid growing tensions with China and
after the US sent six of its B-2 Spirit bombers to train at RAAF Base Amberley
this year.
The upgrades to Tindal that will allow it to house
B-52 are expected to cost $22.5 million and be financed by the US government.
The US Air Force appeared to confirm the plans
telling the ABC, “The RAAF’s ability to host USAF bombers, as well as train
alongside them, demonstrates how integrated our two air forces are.”
The B-52H Stratofortress is a long-range, heavy
bomber that can perform a variety of missions, including nuclear and
conventional bombing alongside maritime surveillance.
The US currently has a fleet of 76, and the
aircraft type has been in operation for more than 60 years. During the first
Gulf War, it dropped 40 per cent of the coalition force’s weapons.
It has an unrefueled combat range in excess of
14,000km.
“The B-52 is capable of dropping or launching the
widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory,” states the US Air Force’s
website.
“This includes gravity bombs, cluster bombs,
precision-guided missiles and joint direct attack munitions.
“Updated with modern technology, the B-52 is
capable of delivering the full complement of joint-developed weapons and will
continue into the 21st century as an important element of our nation’s
defences.
“The Air Force currently expects to operate B-52s
through 2050.”
It comes after the US sent six of its batwing, B-2
Spirit stealth bombers to Amberley this year to train with RAAF F-35s.
The UFO-like Spirit can also carry nuclear weapons
and is thought to be the most expensive aircraft ever made, valued at around $2
billion each.
Their visit amounted to the biggest-ever
deployment of the US’s most important military jet to Australia, with the
country’s active fleet only numbering 20.
It came as the US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. China
retaliated by testing ballistic missiles over Taipei for the first time.
