ST. LOUIS, June 28, 2023—Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the U.S. Air Force today completed the inaugural flight of the service’s first T-7A Red Hawk, marking the start of the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase of the program.
During the 1 hour and 3 minute flight, U.S. Air Force Maj. Bryce Turner, 416th Test Squadron, and Steve Schmidt, Boeing T-7 chief test pilot, validated key aspects of the aircraft and demonstrated the power and agility of the Air Force’s first advanced trainer to be digitally designed, built and tested. The aircraft is one of five EMD aircraft that will be delivered to the Air Force Air Education and Training Command for further testing.
“The stable performance of the aircraft and its advanced cockpit and systems are game changers for U.S. Air Force student pilots and instructors alike,” said Turner, whose grandfather and father were both U.S. Air Force fighter pilots. “We’ve come a long way in training since my family role models flew.”
The T-7A’s vibrant red tails are a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American U.S. military aviators who flew red-tailed fighters during World War II.
The T-7A will enhance warfighter training through:
- Improved pilot readiness: The all-new advanced pilot training system uses high resolution ground-based training systems and simulators to deliver robust and realistic integrated live, virtual and constructive training capabilities.
- Safety: Model-based engineering enabled testing throughout the aircraft’s design and build to help ensure safety before the first flight. The T-7A’s cockpit egress system is the safest of any trainer.
- Flexibility for any mission: With open architecture software and digital fly-by-wire controls, the T-7A supports training for a wide variety of fighter and bomber pilots and can evolve as technologies, threats and training needs change.
“This first flight with the Air Force represents our team’s commitment to delivering a new level of safety and training for fighter and bomber pilots,” said Evelyn Moore, vice president and program manager, Boeing T-7 Programs. “We remain focused on engineering ways to better prepare warfighters for changing mission demands and emerging threats.”
“This is an exciting time for the entire team,” said Col. Kirt Cassell, U.S. Air Force T-7A Red Hawk program manager. “The Red Hawk’s digital design integrating advanced training capabilities will drastically improve pilot training for the next generation of fighter and bomber pilots.”
The T-7A moved from firm concept to flight testing in 36 months. A combination of model-based engineering, 3D design and advanced manufacturing increased first-time quality by 75% and reduced assembly hours by 80%.
In 2018, the Air Force awarded Boeing a $9.2 billion contract for 351 T-7A advanced trainers, 46 simulators and support. The T-7A will replace the Air Force’s aging T-38 aircraft.

Answering questions from reporters on whether the Russian president had been weakened by recent events, Mr Biden said: "It's hard to tell but he's clearly losing the war in Iraq."
Earlier this month, Mr Biden confused listeners when he ended a speech to gun control advocates by exclaiming: "God save the Queen, man."
White House deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton later clarified his remark, saying he was "commenting to someone in the crowd".
She did not add anything further on who he was responding to or what prompted the remark.

Moody Will Get F-35s to Replace its A-10s, Air Force Says
From Thunderbolts to Lightnings, Moody Air Force Base is slated for a big change in the coming years.
The Department of the Air Force announced plans June 26 for the Georgia base to host the F-35A Lightning II starting in fiscal 2027, replacing its A-10 Thunderbolt IIs that are slated to be retired.
Moody isn’t the only base set to get a new mission to replace departing A-10s—the Air Force also announced that Gowen Field Air National Guard Base, Idaho, will transition to F-16s in spring 2027.
The selections of Moody and Gowen Field will not be finalized until environmental impact analyses are complete, the former in the fall of 2025 and the latter in the spring of 2025.
The 23rd Fighter Group arrived at Moody with its A-10Cs in 2007, and Air Force Reserve Command’s 476th Fighter Group, which also flies the A-10, stood up in 2009. In April, the base bid farewell to its first A-10 in years, sending it to the Boneyard at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz.
But while that A-10 was replaced by one from the Indiana Air National Guard, the Air Force now plans to end operations of the aging close air support aircraft at the base. According to a release, the plan is to retire six of Moody’s A-10s in fiscal 2024 if Congress approves the service’s request to cut 42 across the fleet.
From there, the other 48 A-10s at Moody would be retired through fiscal 2028 and replaced over time by two squadrons of F-35s. The new fifth-generation fighters would require an extra 500 personnel, per an Air Force release.
The Idaho Air National Guard’s A-10s are slated to start retiring in the fall of 2026.
The decision to base F-35s at Moody adds to the growing number of locations the Air Force has charted out for its newest fighter. Already, there are F-35s stationed at:
- Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska
- Hill Air Force Base, Utah
- Luke Air Force Base, Ariz.
- Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.
- RAF Lakenheath, U.K.
- Burlington Air National Guard Base, Vt.
- Truax Field, Wisc.
There are another five planned locations, with aircraft projected to arrive anywhere from this fall to several years from now:
- Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.
- Dannelly Field, Ala.
- Jacksonville Air National Guard Base, Fla.
- Barnes Air National Guard Base, Mass.
- Kingsley Field, Ore.

Korean Air delivers first fuselage for Boeing AH-6

MELBOURNE, Australia — Korean Air has delivered
its first AH-6 helicopter fuselage built under a contract with Boeing, the
South Korean company announced June 26.
Korean Air signed the deal in December 2021 to
manufacture eight fuselages for AH-6 helicopters that will undergo final
assembly by Boeing Defense, Space and Security.
The AH-6 is a modernized, light attack variant of
the MH-6 special operations helicopter, which is based on the MD 500/OH-6 light
observation helicopter.
Korean Air did not specify the eventual user of
the helicopters, but Boeing has an outstanding
order for eight AH-6i helicopters from Thailand. The American firm was
awarded a $103 million contract under the Foreign Military Sales program for
the helicopters in February 2022, with delivery set for 2024 and 2025.
The Thai AH-6is will be fitted with Wescam MX-10
electro-optic sensors from L3 Harris Technologies, and will be compatible with
night vision goggles, according to a 2019 U.S. State Department approval
announcement for the proposed sale.
The announcement also said the proposed sale
includes 50 Lockheed Martin-made AGM-114R Hellfire missiles; 200 BAE Systems
Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System laser-guided 2.75-inch rockets; Hydra
unguided rockets; Dillon M134 7.62mm miniguns; and 0.5-inch heavy machine guns.
The Royal Thai Army intends to use the AH-6i to
replace its fleet of Bell AH-1F attack helicopters.
Korean Air was the first South Korean company to
manufacture the MD 500 helicopter, which is also extensively used by the
country’s military. The company has also produced and sold 309 MD 500
helicopters to armed forces, public institutions and private companies from
1977 to 1988, and exported 516 fuselages for the type.
The company has also developed an unmanned MD 500,
and plans to collaborate with Boeing to expand its overseas sales and new
aircraft development and manufacturing business.

USS Ronald Reagans kontakt med den svenske marinen.
Svenskene er mestere i teknolog, også ubåter. De bygde den aller første båten med Air Independent Propulsion. Det betyr at fartøyet kan bevege seg neddykket over mye lengre tid en et fartøy som bare går på batterier. Svenskene benytter seg av særdeles stillegående Sterling motorer som lader batteriene i neddykket tilstand. US Navy lute på dette og leide det første fartøyet av den nye Gotland klassen for å sjekke det ut mot en Task Force som besto av USS Ronald Reagan med eskorte- og forsyningsfartøyer. Svenskene brukte litt tid på å kalibrere båtens utstyr i vann som var saltere enn det i Østersjøen. Vel, øvelsen satte i gang vest av NAS North Island ved San Diego og Gotland hadde så vidt jeg vet 16 simulerte torpedoer om bord. Da øvelsen var slutt viste det seg at Gotland hadde skutt alle sine torpedoer og alle ble dømt som treff. USS Ronald Reagan ble "senket". US Navy ble sjokkert og leide båten inn for et helt år for å finne ut hva som skjedde. Hva dette betød i praksis vet jeg ikke noe om, men USN har enda ikke fått noen konvensjonelle båter. The USS Ronald Reagan and two escort ships steamed into Da Nang Bay on
Sunday, marking the third visit of a U.S. aircraft carrier to Vietnam since
hostilities ended and the first since the COVID-19 pandemic has ebbed.
