The Lufthansa Group has reported widening operating losses during the first three months, but managed to reduce its net loss.

The Group, which comprises several airlines including Austrian, Swiss, Germanwings and Brussels, posted an operating loss of €381 million, a 125 per cent increase on the year ago €169 million. However its net loss during the period reduced 22 per cent from €507 million to €397 million. Overall, revenue rose 5.6 per cent to €6.6 billion

UK budget carrier bmibaby will cease operating in September.
The not unexpected news follows the acquisition of bmi last month by IAG, when it was stated that the Castle Donington based airline (together with bmi regional) were not part of IAG’s plan and would not be integrated into British Airways. Some of bmibay’s services will cease next month after IAG failed to find a buyer for the 10 year old airline which is losing approximately £25 million a year.

Earlier today Air France-KLM posted its results for the first three months, which revealed a debit of €368 million. The loss was approximately the same as the year before even though revenues rose six per cent to €5.6 billion. Operating losses grew to €597 million from the year ago €403 million.

Qantas is to delay delivery of two A380s, originally scheduled for next year, for another three to four years. The final six A380s that Qantas has on order will be delivered from 2018.
According to a statement issued today, the decision is part of the airline group’s plan to “reduce capital expenditure in 2012/13 by a further AU$400 million in addition to the AU$500 million announced in February, as it pursues competitiveness in all business areas.
