Airbus Pulls A400M From Farnborough Flying Display

The Airbus A400M military transport will not fly at the 2012 Farnborough air show in the U.K., Airbus Military confirmed on Thursday. The company says the decision is based on “engine issues that happened last week which need further investigation.” It did not elaborate.
The A400M also did not participate in the flying display at last year’s Paris air show; engine troubles were the cause back then, too.
Airbus is sending the first production standard aircraft, MSN6, to Farnborough. It will be on static display.
The company says flight tests are continuing “at an aggressive pace.” The aircraft is “beginning to show the level of technical maturity required at first delivery.” Airbus concedes there are “some engine maturity challenges,” but says it is confident that “we will find the right solution.”
The A400M has completed 1,180 flights and 3,535 hr. so far. The first three customer aircraft are in final assembly in Seville, Spain.

US lessor Air Lease Corporation (ALC) kicked off the mega-order announcements at Farnborough 2012 with a deal for 75 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft valued at $7.2 billion at list prices. The order—for 60 MAX 8s and 15 MAX 9s plus reconfirmation rights for a future 25 MAXs—is the first MAX purchase by a lessor. Deliveries will run from 2018-22. There is some flexibility to be able to change the split of variants before delivery, ALC said.

“The 737 MAX is an excellent addition to our portfolio and the ideal complement to our growing fleet of Boeing 737-800s,” ALC chairman and CEO Steven Udvar-Hazy said. ALC’s current order for almost 80 737-800s will be delivered between 2012 and 2017.

Answering questions at a press conference at the show, Udvar-Hazy was reminded that as recently as March he had expressed reservations about the 737 MAX and had questioned the decision to single-source the aircraft’s engine with the CFM International LEAP

MBDA has successfully completed firing trials of Meteor, the missile that will be carried by the Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon and Saab Gripen, and the company is now preparing to start production. The collaborative effort by six European nations has been nine years in development but has produced a beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) that is “vastly superior to anything else in the market,” according to chief engineer Andy Bradford.

Boeing and Airbus have both arrived at the Farnborough International 2012 show under new leadership, but don’t expect any cooling in the hostility between the world’s top-two airliner manufacturers. The U.S. airframer is expected to draw the first blood in the orders battle today if, as is expected, Air Lease Corp. confirms an anticipated order for 50 or more of Boeing’s new 737 MAX narrowbodies.

Airbus isn’t set to hold its main show press conference until Thursday morning, but show-goers should be ready for some commercial retaliation here at Farnborough before then. The European airframer’s new president and CEO, Fabrice Bregier, who has taken over from newly promoted EADS chief executive Tom Enders, is expected to spring some sort of surprise, and senior Boeing executives have alerted the press to be on standby for big news right through show week.

FARNBOROUGH: Tekever to fly autonomous UAV at show

Portuguese unmanned air vehicle (UAV) company Tekever will fly Farnborough's first autonomous flight display using the AR4 Light Ray. Although the tactical UAV was unveiled in 2011, the aircraft's official market launch will be at the air show.
Alhough UAVs have been displayed regularly, notably the Schiebel S-100 camcopter at the 2011 Paris air show, Tekever says this marks the major air show debut of an autonomous display in which the aircraft will fly a pre-programmed display without interference or positive control from a human operator.

One of the highlights of the Farnborough air show arrived yesterday as the newest addition to Qatar Airways' fleet touched down after its flight from Seattle. Today, during its validation flight, Flightglobal recorded exclusive air-to-air footage of Qatar's new 787 Dreamliner performing its Farnborough air show aerial display, featuring IR video captured by a FLIR Systems' Star Safire 380HD.

Second prototype AW169 makes maiden flight, first to be at Farnborough

AgustaWestland, has announced that the second prototype of the AW169, “a new generation 4.5 tonne light intermediate helicopter”, successfully completed its maiden flight on Friday at Cascina Costa in Italy. The first AW169 prototype arrived at Farnborough recently in preparation for its public premiere at this week’s International Airshow. “The first two prototypes” said a company statement “will be joined by another later this year and a fourth prototype in 2013.
