Boeing just celebrated a remarkable milestone on Saturday by delivering the 1500th Boeing 747. The manufacturer handed over a Boeing 747-8 to Lufthansa, an airline that has been one of the model’s most important customers over the years. Lufthansa was also the main driver behind the decision to launch the -8 Intercontinental and is currently its only operator in a scheduled passenger configuration. The aircraft handed over was registered D-ABYP and is the carrier’s 14th 747-8 out of an order for 19 aircraft.
Yankee Papa took off from Paine Field on Saturday afternoon with Lufthansa’s head of flight operations Uwe Strohdeicher at the controls. Shortly after take-off, he circled the aircraft back onto final approach to Paine Field coming in from the north and flew over the field with the gear retracted at an altitude of just 70 ft. Strohdeicher then took the aircraft into a take-off climb and made two quick turns to wave good-bye with the wings. The video was taken from seat 46A at the very rear of the economy section. The smooth delivery flight landed in Frankfurt almost nine hours later. Following some cabin reconfiguration work (Lufthansa will take out some of the business class seats again) Yankee Papa is planned to enter scheduled operations in mid-July.
