Incident: Atlas B744 near Chicago on Jan 2nd 2020, engine shut down in flight

An Atlas Air Boeing 747-400, registration N418MC performing flight 5Y-551 from New York JFK,NY to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) wi, was in the initial descent through FL320 towards Chicago when the crew reported they just had a failure of their #2 engine (CF6, inboard left hand), no emergency, no priority and no assistance was needed. ATC told the crew they had declared emergency for them. The aircraft landed safely on Chicago's runway 28C about 40 minutes after reporting the engine failure.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration N412MC continued the next sectors to Anchorage,AK (USA) and Hangzhou (China).

Incident: Laudamotion A320 at Malaga on Jan 2nd 2020, engine shut down in flight


A Laudamotion Airbus A320-200, registration OE-LOX performing flight OE-3225 from Malaga,SP (Spain) to Dusseldorf (Germany), was in the initial climb out of Malaga's runway 13 when the crew stopped the climb at about 6500 feet due to abnormal indications for the right hand engine (CFM56). The crew shut the engine down and returned to Malaga for a safe landing on runway 31 (runway 13 active) about 25 minutes after departure.

The airline reported a warning indication illuminted for one of the engines. The aircraft retuned to Malaga, the passengers disembarked normally. A replacement Ryanair aircraft has been dispatched to Malaga.

A replacement Ryanair Boeing 737-800 registration EI-EBR reached Dusseldorf with a delay of 5.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground about 12 hours after landing.

A ground observer on the ground in Malaga reported maintenance opened the cowls of engine #2 immediately after the aircraft returned back on stand.

On Jan 3rd 2020 Austrianwings reported the crew received a low oil pressure indication as well as a low engine oil quantity indication. The right hand engine lost all engine oil within seconds.


Incident: KLM B738 at Amsterdam on Jan 1st 2020, engine shut down in flight

A KLM Boeing 737-800, registration PH-BGB performing flight KL-1481 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Glasgow,SC (UK), was climbing out of Amsterdam's runway 24, when the right hand engine (CFM56) suffered a failure emitting a loud bang, streaks of flames and severe vibrations. The crew stopped the climb at FL070, shut the engine down and returned to Amsterdam for a safe landing on runway 18R about 25 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported the right hand engine began vibrating severely during takeoff and became unusually loud. After the aircraft had lifted off and had climbed some, the engine emitted a loud bang with a flash of fire. The engine was shut down, the captain announced it was probably a bird strike. The aircraft returned to Amsterdam.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration PH-BXI reached Glasgow with a delay of 2:45 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground about 24 hours after landing.


Incident: Edelweiss A343 at Zurich on Jan 1st 2020, engine shut down in flight


An Edelweiss Air Airbus A340-300, registration HB-JMG performing flight WK-24 from Zurich (Switzerland) to Cancun (Mexico), was climbing out of Zurich's runway 16 when the crew stopped the climb due to an abnormal indication for engine #3 (CFM56, inboard right hand). The crew shut the engine down, dumped fuel and returned to Zurich for a safe landing on runway 16 about 80 minutes after departure.

The airline reported a false indication prompted the crew to shut the engine down.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 110 minutes, then departed again and is estimated to reach Cancun with a delay of about 3.5 hours.
